Definitions

I have been doing some readings and trying to become clear on all the definitions for the jargon that is used.  These are the definitions that made the most sense to me:
  • e-learning - online access to learning resources, anywhere and anytime.  (Holmes & Gardner, 2006)
  • Educational Technology - a combination of the processes and tools involved in addressing educational needs and problems, with an emphasis on applying the most current tools.  (Roblyer & Edwards, 2003)
  • NET - the modern, electronic technology used to enable and enhance teaching and learning. (Study Guide 2)
  • Artifacts: for example the computer is an artifact.
I think I am starting to get my head around the terminology, hopefully this will help me make sense of the readings!

Hi Emily. Good to see your reflective blog underway.

The Jargon is rather daunting and confusing - particularly since different people use the same terms in different ways.

If you look at the Ministry of Education's e-learning strategy document (see the Study Guide 3 on the Moodle site) you will notice that the definition that they quote (and seem to follow) is one that is broader than just Online klearning - although this often considered to be the major form or "e-learning".

Isn't it interesting how language is evolving as we introduce more and more technology into our lives. I got a strange look on the weekend when I told a group I wanted a wii. Somethings just don't translate very well.

fHey Emily...what a treat to open your blog and see the fmiliar site of whangarei heds jump out at me...it is the view from my office so had an instant connection....Im with you on the daunting vocab!!!! Im trying to get some kind of control over the invention of jargon surrounding technology....in reading and discussions it seems there is a huge barrier of vocab understanding to get over before you can really even start to understand the content...must be what it is like to learn to read when you are little. The amount of jargon involved in technology, I suppose in response to the massive explosion of invention and information that is now required to explain this mountain of new stuff! It is understandable but very difficult when you are trying to get your head around how effective you can be in the clssroom.....students hve a huge range of vocab and jargon that we re almost not even privy to alot of the time. It reiterates our need as teachers to ' get with the programe ' and stay up to date....I cn just imagine my parent reaction twenty years ago if I had said ' Got this new phat girls addy and I'm gonna look up her blog later to see what kind of wicked and mean things she's into' So a challenge for me is to get with the lingo and then apply some NET strtegies in my class.
